Richard Avedon completed his five-year portrait project "In the American West" more than 20 years ago. But the pictures it yielded, dramatically presented at Foam (Amsterdam), have lost none of their power or fascination.
With a couple of assistants, a view camera and tripod, Avedon (1923-2004) roamed the Western states, avoiding the cities, searching for people willing to have their portraits taken.
